The Supreme Court on Wednesday indicted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf lawmaker Aamir
Liaquat Hussain in a contempt of court case.
As a two-judge bench comprising Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Umar Atta Bandial
took up the case pertaining to ‘contemptuous’ remarks by Aamir
Liaquat Hussain during a TV
program, th
e counsel of the accused reiterated an unconditional apology on behalf of his client, pleading that the
program was not intended to criticize the court. However, Justice Ijazul Ahsan remarked, “We had set today as the date for indictment and the time for apologies has passed.” The court then indicted the TV host under Article 204(3) of the constitution. Amir, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In August, the apex court had slapped contempt of court charges against Amir
Liaquat. The petitioners had pleaded that contempt proceedings be initiated against the TV host as the court had allowed him to continue his
programme on the condition that he would abstain from using derogatory words against anyone. However, he did not comply with the court orders and used derogatory language against several people from the rival media g
roup.
